Towards early evaluation of surgical innovations using an integrated approach

This course stems from a VICI project called “Towards early evaluation of surgical innovations using an integrated approach” which aimed to add to the “science of surgical evaluation”, and allow for development of surgical innovations that are affordable, effective, and of value for the patient. We did so by establishing novel and comprehensive methodology to evaluate the value of surgical innovations throughout all stages of development. The surgical innovation pathway is too long, too expensive, not regulated, and lacking an evidence-based evaluation approach. We have developed new approaches evaluating surgical innovations including medical devices from as early as their conception. These methods are also used and acknowledged as useful by other (inter)national organizations, like the IDEAL collaboration that adopted these methods in their stage 0, and Heath Innovation Netherlands (HI-NL).

Frequently asked questions

This course is tailor-made for healthcare innovators and individuals keen on delving into the early evaluation of medical devices. Its design ensures that it delivers valuable insights to a wide-ranging audience and different types of innovations.

This course is designed to be accessible to a diverse audience, making it suitable for individuals with varying levels of background knowledge. While it may pose some challenges for those less familiar with healthcare, clinical studies, and current innovation evaluation processes, rest assured that you can still grasp the core concepts and messages of the course. To support your learning journey, our resources page offers additional information and background materials that can aid in expanding your knowledge.

This course is freely accessible.

It was developed based on a VICI-project grant from the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) and ZonMW. The project was titled:  “Towards early evaluation of surgical innovations using an integrated approach” (project number 91818617).

The course comprises two modules, each taking about an hour to complete. The modules come with engaging assignments, these tasks encourage you to consult with stakeholders and delve into the added value of your innovation. While these assignments may extend the time commitment, it’s important to note that their completion is not mandatory for progressing through the course.
